Diversity is relevant to the meeting and events industry for a number of reasons. Starting from the fact that society and event audiences are becoming increasingly more ethnic and gender diverse, with the public welcoming a diversity of opinions and interests, the need to have a strategic approach in promoting diversity at events is crucial.

There are no fixed rules to follow when it comes to diversity, but these 6 strategies can help you to build more dynamic and unique events.

Start changes from the top

Create a conference planning committee with different backgrounds and experiences; there are likely to cover gaps in content and programming.

Change your rules

You should have a “gender parity” policy for your speakers’ line up. The diversity of your speakers need to reflect the diversity of your audience if you want to have highly personal and relevant content.

Be bold, be different!

Speakers’ lineup is the core of any good event, and where you will need to focus your energies to deliver the fresh perspective necessary to create a truly interactive and engaging experience.

Ensure your attendees are being stimulated by bringing in speakers who can challenge the audience to think bigger and broader.

Diversity is in every detail

Diversity can be found in catering, programme subjects and timing that will respect different gender, choices, religions and ethnic backgrounds; are you sure all your attendees are comfortable with what you are offering?

Ask for help:

Seek partnership with multicultural networks and organizations like the Asian-Canadian Special Events Association, the International Association of Hispanic Meeting Professionals, Best in Black Awards; they will bring an all different flavour to your event.

Pay attention to the voice of the few

Look further out; invite influential event professionals and event bloggers from emerging countries.
